Background and training

I trained in painting under the supportive tutelage of Yvonne Hindle & Dexter Dalwood in Newcastle in the mid 1990’s. In 2003 I received a scholarship to study at the Royal Drawing School (London) on the Drawing Year. For three years I practiced life drawing at the School 3 days a week and studied contemporary and historic drawings and paintings.

I experience figure drawing as very engaging subject matter and continue to practice it despite my work having progressed into abstraction.  I also regularly draw from my environment, nature and landscape. Both drawing from life and photography inspire my abstract drawings and paintings. More about my work.

I make transcriptions (copies) of artists work in order to learn about individual artists use of composition, colour and paint application. On the right here you see my transcriptions of Van Eyck, Poussin and Rubens.

The relationship of mindfulness and art has been a deeply enriching investigation for over 29 years and I am glad to have opportunities to share this with others through my artwork, mentoring and teaching practice.
