4 WEEK COURSE

Investigate a range of traditional and experimental ways to make tonal drawings, whilst exploring the benefits of mindfulness practice in relation to drawing. A practical drawing course from observation, the imagination and abstraction.

Dates: 05/03/24 - 26/03/24 Tuesdays 6-9pm

What is the course about?

You will be introduced to a range of traditional and experimental, contemporary and historic ways of expressing tone in drawing. You will be shown how to use a variety of drawing materials, discover their unique properties and ways to handle them. There will be a variety of guided exercises inspired by a range of artists work, to stimulate a range of expressiveness in your drawings. Each week we will investigate a mindfulness theme to inspire your work and connection to the drawing process. The drawing studio is fully accessible by wheelchair.

What will we cover?

• A range of experimental and traditional approaches to drawing tone (light and dark) including hatching, blending, additive and subtractive tone, tonal grounds, layered drawings and mixed media.
• A variety of artists drawings both contemporary and historic to inspire new ways of handling your materials and expressing yourself through tone.
• Subject matter from nature, the world around us, imagination and abstraction.
• Mindfulness themes to support concentration, freedom of expression, feeling and empathy in the drawing process.
• Key ideas on how mindfulness works with reference to recent scientific theory.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Create tonal drawings from observation and the imagination with more confidence.
• Demonstrate the ability to make tonal drawings engaging a range of traditional and experimental media and methods.
• Identify what materials and artists inspire you.
• Apply mindfulness approaches in your drawings, to stimulate your creativity and support you to access new ways of expressing yourself in drawing.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for enthusiastic beginners to drawing as well as those with experience in drawing or mindfulness who wish to re-fresh their practice and stimulate new directions.
